HTC Inspire Brings 4G to AT&T Customers, Mobile Productivity Wins

Yesterday, AT&T began selling the HTC Inspire 4G. The Inspire features a massive 4.3” super LED display – the largest of any phone on AT&T’s network – and runs the latest iteration of the HTC Sense UI, all for $99 (after a 2-year agreement). It also marks a number of firsts for AT&T:

  • It is the first 4G phone on their network
  • It is the first device to run Android 2.2 on AT&T
  • It is the first device to make use of the new Mobile Hotspot application

The HTC Inspire brings an impressive list of features that are sure to be a hit among new phone buyers. I could dedicate an entire post just to those features. However, I’d like to focus on one specific feature: 4G. With the increasing amount of work done on while the go, the speed of your mobile device’s wireless connection becomes more and more important.

As I was writing this post, I decided to run a speed test on my 3G device. The result? I got a little over 1mbps down. To put that in perspective, most home internet connections are at least 10x faster. For downloading a small document or photo, 1mbps is does just fine. However, when downloading large documents with charts and graphics or high-resolution photos for work, you’ll often find yourself waiting for as long as a few minutes, depending on your signal quality. It may not seem like much, but over time it adds up and eats away at your productivity.

The obvious question in all of this is, of course, what does 4G mean when compared to 3G? The answer depends on whom you ask. At the end of the day, “4G” is merely a label. What it really means is that mobile data connection speeds are constantly improving – and when your mobile productivity relies on the ability to access data quickly, that is what truly matters!

How to sync the Motorola DROID X with Outlook

The new Motorola DROID X, available today, rightly deserves its position is Verizon’s new flagship phone. The DROID X features a huge 4.3″ screen, a lightning-fast 1 GHz processor, an 8 megapixel camera, and it runs Android 2.1. With all these amazing features, it’s a bit surprising to learn that the DROID X does not include any way to sync with Microsoft Outlook out of the box.

Google provides a free tool called Google Calendar Sync that syncs Outlook calendars to any Google account. The DROID X can be configured to then automatically sync with that Google account. However, Google Calendar Sync is a bit limited, as it only supports the primary Outlook calendar, and does not include data range options or Outlook categories support.

Android Tech Tip – Link Calendar items to Contacts using DejaOffice

DejaOffice, an application suite of contacts, calendar, tasks and notes apps for Android, now allows you to link your contacts to individual calendar entries, tasks and notes. This lets you easily check who an appointment or a meeting was scheduled with, or view everyone attached to a certain project in your task list. To link a calendar entry to a contact, open DejaOffice, navigate to the calendar, and bring up the details screen for a calendar event. From here, tap the ‘Add Contact’ button and your address book should open up. Select the contact you’d like to attach, save, and you’re done!

Android takes the lead in US smartphone market

In a report released today by research firm NPD Group, it was shown that the sharp growth of the Android OS over the last two quarters has helped it surpass the iPhone and secure the number two spot in US smartphone share behind BlackBerry. Android’s remarkable growth can be attributed in part to the large success of the Motorola DROID on Verizon.  Android has also done well due to the fact that it has permeated all the major US carriers, with models available such as the HTC Hero on Sprint, and the Motorola BACKFLIP on AT&T.

CompanionLink has been on the forefront of Android synchronization, offering support for Android since the flagship T-Mobile G1 launched in 2008. CompanionLink now offers two methods to sync Android – wired USB sync and wireless sync through Google. Dell Announces New Android Phones

Some drool-inducing new phones from Dell have just been spotted by the fine folks over at Engadget. Dell’s upcoming lineup includes new Android-powered and Windows 7 Series devices, as well as a pair of Android tablets. 2010 is shaping up to be a very good year for Android fans.

As these new phones launch, thousands of consumers will be looking for ways to sync these phones to their PCs. That’s where CompanionLink comes in. DejaOffice, a mobile office application suite for Android, will provide these new phones with business friendly contacts, calendar, tasks and notes apps.
