Setup Guide - CompanionLink with Pocket PC/Windows Mobile (direct sync) for Windows Vista

This section talks about issues specific to configuring a Pocket PC/Windows Mobile handheld to sync directly between your contact manager and your handheld in Windows Vista

Warnings
NOTE: With the direct sync, you must ALWAYS disconnect the handheld before opening CompanionLink Setup.

You must use build 3026 or higher of CompanionLink in order to synchronize direct.


Setup instructions

  1. Disconnect the handheld.
  2. Open CompanionLink Setup.
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-D.
  4. This should open a Windows Explorer window with a list of files.
  5. In this window, go to Edit > Select All, then File > Delete.
  6. Close the Windows Explorer window, and exit entirely out of CompanionLink Setup.
  7. Open the Windows Mobile Device Center.
  8. Go to Mobile Device Settings > End a partnership.
  9. Select each partnership and click 'End Partnership' until none are remaining. Click Back.
  10. Connect the handheld.
  11. Select 'Set up your device'.
  12. Select 'Yes, I want to synchronize with only this one computer' and click Next.
  13. Uncheck all options at the 'What kinds of items do you want to sync?' screen. No boxes should be checked.
  14. Click Next.
  15. Create a name for the partnership, or leave it at the default. Take note of this name.
  16. Click Setup.
  17. Once Windows Mobile Device Center says 'Connected', disconnect the handheld.
  18. Right-click the CompanionLink Setup icon and choose Run As Administrator.
  19. The configuration wizard should open.
  20. Select the language and click Next.
  21. Select Windows Mobile. The partnership name that displayed in Windows Mobile Device Center should display in the Username dropdown field.
  22. Click Next.
  23. Select your contact manager and click Configure.
  24. Click on the Category Field tab. If there are fewer than three fields in the dropdown menu, please stop here and contact us.
  25. Go to the Purge And Reload tab. Check all of the boxes in this tab.
  26. Configure any other desired settings.
  27. Click OK, then Next, then Finish.
  28. Exit entirely out of CompanionLink.
  29. Reconnect the handheld.
  30. The Clx- items (CompanionLink's conduits) should start to synchronize.

How do I sync the handheld?
Make sure that CompanionLink Setup is not open, then connect your handheld. Your handheld will synchronize automatically whenever it is connected to your computer.


Can I sync wirelessly?
While the wireless sync is compatible with all Windows Mobile/Pocket PC handhelds, this sync does not sync direct or through Outlook, but rather wirelessly with your handheld.

NOTE: In order to use the wireless sync, you must have CompanionLink Professional 2.0, build 2642, or higher installed, and you must also sign up for the wireless sync service, which costs $9.95/month. The sign-up is done within CompanionLink Professional.
