Speed Patch for BlackBerry phones

Starting with CompanionLink Express and Pro builds 3068 and higher, BlackBerry users who have over 1000 contact records and who are running BlackBerry OS 4.5 – 4.7 will be prompted to install the speed patch on their phone at the end of each synchronization, as part of the Sync Completed message.

The patch increases the sync speed by logging record transaction times.
This allows CompanionLink to synchronize by looking only at changed records on the BlackBerry instead of querying the entire BlackBerry database for changes. This frequently cuts sync times down by 50% or more.

Sync Outlook Business Contact Manager with phones

CompanionLink can sync Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager data with BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm Pre, Google, Windows Mobile and Palm OS phones.

In fact, Microsoft’s help portal mentions CompanionLink as a solution for BCM sync with various devices not supported natively by Microsoft.

T-Mobile myTouch 3G

This second generation Google Android phone will be available on August 5 through T-Mobile.   Reviews show that this phone is a significant step forward for the Google Android mobile platform from the first phone – the G1.

However, complete compatibility with Microsoft Exchange seems to be crippled.

Here’s what BusinessWeek said about the phone’s Exchange support:

“You can send and receive Exchange e-mail, but unlike the iPhone or Palm Pre, there’s no direct access to Exchange’s contact and calendar features. Instead, the myTouch requires you to use Google’s Contact Sync and Calendar Sync to move data from Outlook to a Google server, and from there to the handset. It’s a clumsy and incomplete solution.”

Closing ACT! activities and creating history item

CompanionLink allows you to complete an ACT! calendar activity on your phone.  CompanionLink allows creates a History item for the completed activity.

You can do this by inserting a forward slash “/” in the subject line of the calendar activity on your phone.

For example, if you have a phone call at 2:30 that needs to be marked as complete, you can insert a “/” at the beginning of the subject of the calendar activity:

When CompanionLink will sync this data back to ACT!, it will complete the activity and create a History item in ACT!.  Of course, History needs to be enabled under the Note Options tab.

Linking contacts to calendar activities/events

Here’s a common request:

“I’m using ACT!.  How do I link a contact to a calendar activity on my phone?  Also, how do I see the name of the contact without opening up the calendar activity on my phone?”

CompanionLink can link contacts to calendar activities.  CompanionLink also has a Calendar Format tab that allows you to define where the contact will show up on your phone.

If you select the “Description preceded by link name” option, this will put the name of the contact just in front of the subject of the Calendar Activity.  This way, when you look on your phone’s calendar, you’ll see the name in your daily schedule.

Lotus Notes to Google Apps migration

Google just released a tool to migrate Lotus Notes data to Google Apps.  Companies that want to migrate their users from a Lotus Notes/Domino server to Google Apps now have a seamless solution for one-time migration.

Format for Street Address field in Google has changed

Google contacts

The “street address” field in Gmail/Google contacts used to be stored internally as 1 field.  It’s now stored as 5 fields.

All CompanionLink users who sync with Google have two options to ensure their sync solution works with this change by Google:

1. Click on the “Older version” link near the top-right corner of Gmail contacts. This will revert to the older Google storage format of 1 field.

2. Download CompanionLink build 3066 or higher and select reread PC data.  This will work with the new Google storage format of 5 fields.

At CompanionLink, we get this question at least a dozen times a day.  At least.

Since CompanionLink supports all the major smart phones, our advice is to get the phone that works for you.  Our software will work with it.  If you still need help determining which one is right for you, here’s a 2009 smart phone report by Consumer Reports ranking the best phones.  Apple iPhone, Palm Pre, and BlackBerry all topped the list.

Google Apps Status Dashboard

Do you use any of Google’s services like Gmail or Calendar?  Google has released a new Status Dashboard that shows what the state of their services are.
