Repair/Re-Install Outlook 2010/2013/2016/2019/365

Microsoft Outlook may need to be re-installed or repaired in order to fix certain problems. These steps can be necessary when:

  • Outlook is not opening or nothing happens when you select Outlook.
  • You get an error when opening Outlook.
  • The email boxes connected to Outlook are not updating.

The problem may have started after upgrading Outlook, installing add-ins, or other possible changes on your system. These can all be resolved with a Quick repair or if necessary an Online (full) Repair. To repair the Outlook installation, please follow the below steps for your Outlook\Office version.



Verify the version of Outlook

App Store Version: If you have the Windows Store version of Office this will appear as Microsoft Office Desktop Apps In the Apps list of Windows 10 or 11. If Outlook will open, you can also check here:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Select File then Office Account.
  3. If the Version under About Outlook shows Desktop Apps or Windows Store then you have the App Store version.


ISO or Click to Run Version: If you have the ISO or "Click to Run" of Office this will appear as Microsoft Office 365 Apps in the Programs and Features list of Windows 10 or 11. If Outlook will open, you can also check here:

  1. Open Outlook.
  2. Select File then Office Account.
  3. If the Version under About Outlook shows Click to Run then you have the ISO / Click to Run version.


Quick Repair

Windows App Store Outlook (Centennial):

Repair:

  1. From Start select Settings to launch Windows Settings
  2. From Windows Settings choose Apps. (It might take a few moments for the Apps list to load)
  3. Find Microsoft Office Desktop Apps on the list and select it.
  4. Select Advanced Options and in the menu that opens, choose Repair.


Re-install:

  1. From Start select Settings to launch Windows Settings
  2. From Windows Settings choose Apps. (It might take a few moments for the Apps list to load)
  3. Find Microsoft Office Desktop Apps on the list and select it.
  4. Select Uninstall. Once complete, reinstall the Office Suite from the Windows App Store.








Outlook 365/2021/2019/2016/2013/2010 (ISO/Click to Run):

  1. From Start select Settings then click Apps, then Apps & Features/Installed Apps.
  2. Find Microsoft Office 2021/2019/2016/2013/2010 in the list and highlight it. (Selection also say Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft 365 Apps or Microsoft 365).
  3. Click Change (may be listed as Modify).
  4. Select Repair, Quick Repair and Continue then follow the prompts.
  5. After the repair is finished, please try the sync again.





Outlook 2007 and Lower

Outlook 2007:

  1. Open Microsoft Office 2007.
  2. On the Help menu, click Office Diagnostics.
  3. Click Continue, and then Start Diagnostics.




Outlook 2003:

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)
  2. Select Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Select Microsoft Office/Outlook
  4. Click the Change.
  5. Select the Reinstall or Repair button, click Next.
  6. Select Detect and Repair.
  7. Click Install and follow any prompts provided by the repair tool.






Online Repair

Outlook 365/2021/2019/2016/2013/2010 Online Repair:
WARNING: An Online Repair does an uninstall then a reinstall of Office, if something goes wrong in this process, you may need to reinstall Office manually which may require a product key

  1. Open the Control Panel on your PC (and show All Control Panel items, if necessary) and click on Programs, then Programs and Features.
  2. Find Microsoft Office 2021/2019/2016/2013/2010 in the list and highlight it. (Selection also say Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft 365 Apps or Microsoft 365).
  3. Right Click and select Change.
  4. Select Online Repair and Continue then follow the prompts.
  5. After the repair is finished, please restart the PC try the sync again.


  • Note: If Quick Repair does not fix this issue, you can try running the Online Repair as outlined above.
