ERSP: New BlackBerry Classic device setup walkthrough BB

Please note: the information contained in this article refers to devices running BlackBerry 7 and lower.

[AB42487] As you've already had CompanionLink set up to sync with a Blackberry in the past, there are only three steps to switching to the new Blackberry: Configure the Blackberry Desktop Manager, check the settings in CompanionLink, and Synchronize!

Please make sure you back up all related databases before starting.

Setting up Blackberry Desktop Manager

For Blackberry Desktop Manager 6.0:

  1. Open Blackberry Desktop Manager. Connect your Blackberry to the PC. Wait for the Blackberry Desktop Manager to display the Blackberry PIN, make note of this number.
  2. Click the Device Options button. Make sure the box for "Organizer Data" is unchecked. Click OK.
  3. On the left hand side of your screen click Add-Ins. Make sure CompanionLink is listed here. Check the box next to CompanionLink.


For Blackberry Desktop Manager 5.0:

  1. Open Blackberry Desktop Manager. Connect your Blackberry to the PC. Wait for the Desktop Manager to display the Blackberry PIN at the bottom, make note of this PIN.
  2. From the main menu of the Desktop Manager, click the Synchronize icon.
  3. In the check boxes at the top of the screen:
    1. Make sure that Synchronize Organizer Data is not checked.
    2. Check Run Add-In actions.
    3. Check Update Device Date And Time.
    4. There will be a check box at the bottom of the screen. Make sure this box is not checked. This box may say "Synchronize the selected items when your device is connected to the Blackberry Desktop Manager",

"Synchronize the items selected above automatically when your device is connected" or some variation thereof.

  1. On the left hand side of your screen, below Configure, click on Add-ins. Make sure that CompanionLink is listed. Check the box next to CompanionLink.

Setting up CompanionLink on the PC for the new Blackberry

For CompanionLink 4.0:

  1. Open CompanionLink Setup.
  2. Click Blackberry Settings. You will see a drop down menu for Blackberry PIN. Change this drop down to match the PIN of the new Blackberry. Click OK.
  3. At the CompanionLink Setup main screen click the Options menu at the top and select "Purge and Reload All". WARNING: The next sync will delete all existing records on your Blackberry. Are you sure you wish to continue?. Answer Yes to this warning.
  4. Exit CompanionLink.

For CompanionLink 3.0:

  1. Open CompanionLink Setup.
  2. Click on Settings (click Next if the select profile screen appears).
  3. You will see "PDA Name: Blackberry" and a drop down menu for user name. Change the user name to match the PIN of the new Blackberry. Click Next.
  4. You will see your contact manager listed. Click Configure.
  5. Select the Purge and Reload tab.
  6. Check each of the boxes here. WARNING: The next sync will delete all contact/calendar/task/memo data from the Blackberry and reload it from your contact manager. Answer Yes to the warning.
  7. Click Apply and OK
  8. Click Next and Finish
  9. Exit CompanionLink

To Synchronize

For Blackberry Desktop Manager 6.0:

  1. Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager.
  2. Connect your Blackberry to the PC.
  3. On the left hand side click Add-Ins.
  4. In the lower right corner of the Desktop Manager click Sync.

For Blackberry Desktop Manager 5.0:

  1. Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager.
  2. Connect your Blackberry to the PC. Wait for the Blackberry PIN to display at the bottom.
  3. From the main menu click Synchronize.
  4. Click on the Synchronize button.
