General File Transfer error

Symptoms:

  • Using Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
  • Installing CompanionLink/DoubleLook/DoubleNotes.
  • Error message: 'General file transfer error. Please check your target location and try again. Error number -3.'


Explanation:

In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, it is possible to turn off support for 8dot3 filename creation. If you do so, then the installation process for our software will fail.


Fix:

  1. Click on the Start menu and click on Run.
  2. In the Run box, type regedt32, and then click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, in the lefthand window, click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE.
  4. Click the plus sign next to SYSTEM.
  5. Click the plus sign next to CurrentControlSet.
  6. Click the plus sign next to Control.
  7. Click on the FileSystem folder.
  8. In the righthand window, find NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation, then right-click this and choose Modify.
  9. In the Value Data box, type the number 0.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Exit the Registry Editor.
  12. Restart your computer.
  13. Retry the installation process.
