How to turn off Google Sync on an Android device

When you set up your Android, iPhone or iPad, it automatically sets your Contacts and Calendar to synchronize with Google. When you use other services for this it can cause duplicates and a ton of clutter. For those that want to turn off Google Contact and Calendars sync here's how:

How to Unsync Google Contacts and Calendar on an Android Device

  1. On the main Android home screen find and tap Settings.
  2. Select "Accounts and Backup". This may appear as "Accounts & Sync", "Data Synchronization", or "Cloud and Accounts".
  3. Tap "Accounts" or select the Google account name if it appears directly. This is usually designated with the Google "G" logo.
  4. Select "Sync Account" after selecting Google from the accounts list.
  5. Tap "Sync Contacts" and "Sync Calendar" to disable the Contact and Calendar sync with Google.

How to Unsync Google Contacts and Calendar on an iPhone or iPad

iOS 9 through iOS 16:

  1. Go to the iOS Settings app
  2. Tap Contacts
  3. Tap Accounts
  4. Tap the desired Google/Gmail account
  5. Tap the sliders for contacts and calendar to turn off the sync. You can choose to either keep the existing records on the device or delete them when prompted



Disable and Clear Google Location History

Unless it is disabled, Google automatically enables Location History for your Mobile device. To disable and clear this history:

  1. Log in to your Google Account Settings and select Data & Privacy. Click Here for a direct link.
  2. Under History settings select "Location History".
  3. Click "Turn Off", click "Pause", click "Got it"


This will prevent Google from recording your Phones location history. To Clear the history data Google already has, go to the Google Maps Timeline page here

  1. Click Delete (trash can icon)
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions.











Disable Chrome Browser History Sync

By Default Google syncs the Chrome Browsers History and Bookmarks across any device connected to the same Google Account. To Disable this History/Bookmark sync on the mobile:

  1. On the main Android home screen find and tap Settings.
  2. Select "Accounts and Backup". This may appear as "Accounts & Sync", "Data Synchronization", or "Cloud and Accounts".
  3. Tap "Accounts" or select the Google account name if it appears directly. This is usually designated with the Google "G" logo.
  4. Select "Sync Account" after selecting Google from the accounts list.
  5. Tap "Sync Chrome" to disable the Contact and Calendar sync with Google.
