If you’re in the market for a new smartphone these days, odds are you’ve heard about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. If not, I’d encourage you to go read about it here.

The Galaxy S III’s predecessor, aptly name the Galaxy S II, has been one of the most popular Android phones among our customers over the past year. And based on what we’ve heard about the new Galaxy S III, we’re expecting it to be quite popular as well.

While we don’t have an S III in-house to test just yet, we do know enough about it to say with a high degree of confidence that CompanionLink will be able to sync with the S III right out of the box. Of course, once we get our hands on one, we’ll confirm this.

And if you just can’t wait another month or so for the S III to launch, we’re pretty big fans of the HTC One X too. And, of course, it syncs with CompanionLink!

How to Sync Your Android Phone and Tablet with CompanionLink

Did you know that you can sync both an Android phone and tablet with just one license of CompanionLink for Outlook?

When you’re syncing Android devices with Outlook, we’ve designed a feature that allows you to swap devices in CompanionLink 5 for Outlook without adjusting any other configuration.

The secret lies in our USB and WiFi sync options. Simply switch the phone and tablet at any time – there’s no extra configuration required – and your data will sync effortlessly.

Note that this only works when syncing via USB and WiFi. For syncing multiple devices via CompanionLink Secure Hosted, Google, or Windows Live, you’ll need CompanionLink Express 5 or CompanionLink Professional 5.

The HTC One X has made its official debut, and it’s earning its fair share of favorable reviews. In fact, it is quickly becoming a top contender for being the best Android smartphone on the market today.

The One X features a large 4.7” screen, yet maintains a rather slim profile and, as such,HTC One X doesn’t feel abnormally large. It’s a good size, overall. The 1280×720 display is also one of the best smartphone displays currently available, making interacting with the device a pleasure. It’s also loaded with a quad-core (or dual-core, if you’re in the US) processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4G LTE. In short, the One X is a big, beautiful, and lighting fast smartphone. No wonder the reviewers love it.

The difference between DejaConnect USB and Mass Storage Mode

CompanionLink recently introduced a new USB sync method for Android devices calledSync Android via USB DejaConnect USB. This means that we now offer two methods to sync Android via USB – DejaConnect, and Mass Storage Mode.

Mass Storage Mode is our legacy mode that has been around since we started offering USB sync for Android over two years ago. It works by mounting the device’s SD card to the PC, and then allowing CompanionLink to read and write the DejaOffice database on the SD card. This worked well, although it required you to monitor the sync and tell DejaOffice when CompanionLink was finished with the sync on the PC.

Fast-forward to 2012. Google recently released the Galaxy Nexus – the first Android deviceGalaxy Nexus with Android 4.0 (also known as Ice Cream Sandwich). One of the big differences with this new operating system was that it didn’t mount the storage to the PC like it used to (it uses a new method called MTP). This means our old method, Mass Storage Mode, no longer works with these new devices!

We put our thinking caps on and decided that we had to start from scratch. We’re pleased to say that not only do we have a new USB sync method, but it works even better than our old method! DejaConnect USB is the result of those efforts.

DejaConnect works by utilizing a feature called “USB Debugging” on the device in conjunction with special USB development drivers (also known as ADB drivers) installed on the PC. This allows CompanionLink to interface directly with the connected device, resulting in a smoother, hands-free sync. Now, we can detect when the device is connected and start the sync automatically (this option is configurable).

Enable auto-sync for Android

We’ll be recommending DejaConnect as the preferred sync method going forward. DejaConnect supports Android 2.1 and above, including tablets running Android 3.x and new devices with Android 4.0. Mass Storage Mode supports Android 1.x and 2.x devices.

To get started using DejaConnect, follow this setup guide. You’ll need to configure both CompanionLink and DejaOffice to use DejaConnect USB, and make sure you install the USB driver for your specific device.

An Update on Syncing With Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

CompanionLink fully supports two-way sync with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) devices.

The latest version of Android, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich, officially launched a few months back with the Galaxy Nexus. Beyond that, however, sightings of Ice Cream Sandwich on new or existing devices have been few and far between. That’s starting to change.

Just last week, HTC officially released the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for the Vivid on AT&T. The updates don’t stop there, though. AT&T announced plans to update 10 more Android smartphones and tablets in the near future. And that’s just from one carrier. The others are following suit as well.

At CompanionLink, we’ve had our hands on Ice Cream Sandwich for a while via our Galaxy Nexus. And we’ve been taking advantage of that. Not only have we ensured that DejaOffice runs properly on Android 4.0, but we’ve been busy adding features and improvements designed with this update in mind. For example, some Android 4.0 devices, like the Galaxy Nexus, don’t play nicely with out existing USB sync. To that end, we’ve developed an entirely new USB sync system. It’s even better than before, and it’s in beta right now. We’ll have more on that later.

We’re also taking the time to improve the interface and bring it more in line with the look and feel that Ice Cream Sandwich features. Expect to see those updates soon as well.

Introducing DejaConnect – USB Syncing Now Easier Than Ever

Syncing via USB shouldn’t be complicated.

It used to be that you could you could just plug in your phone to the computer and it would automatically start syncing. Somewhere along the way, we lost that standard.

Sure, today’s devices can sync with the cloud out of the box. That works well for some, but many of us still need the good, old-fashioned security of a USB sync. With DejaConnect USB, we’re making that sync easier than ever.

DejaConnect allows you to simply plug in your device to begin a sync. That’s it. It really can’t get much easier than that.

The first sync with DejaConnect mode requires a brief setup. After that, it’s up to you whether it syncs automatically when you plug it in, or only after you press sync. With DejaConnect, sync just happens. You don’t have to think about it, or worry if you’re doing it right. We’ll take care of the heavy lifting and let you focus on what’s important to you.

How to Sync Your Google Tasks with Outlook

Google Tasks can be great – they’re easy to use and tied to your existing Gmail or Google Apps account. It’s definitely convenient. Getting tasks out of Gmail or Google Apps, however, can be anything but convenient. Until now.

CompanionLink has supported syncing Google Tasks for some time, but it was limited to a single task list within Google. With our most recent update to CompanionLink 5, you are now able to sync multiple Google Task lists with Outlook and DejaOffice.

Here’s how it works.

If a task in Outlook has a category that matches a task list name in Google, then the Outlook task will sync to that list in Google. Similarly, if a task in Google has a task list name that matches a category in Outlook, then the Google task will sync to that category in Outlook.

Alternatively, if a task in Outlook does not have a category that matches a task list name in Google, then the Outlook task will sync to the default list in Google. If the opposite is true and a task in Google has a task list name that is not a category in Outlook, CompanionLink will create a matching category as part of the sync process.
